About

Jamey Bazes

I grew up in Westchester County, New York, and have spent much of my life up in the beautiful Hudson Valley area, having attended Bard College and then graduate school in New Paltz. If I can go to lunch in a bustling college town and then walk seamlessly onto a 19th century rail trail, then my heart is content.

I have been described by my friends and family as an enthusiast. I love getting into a flow state and losing myself completely in whatever it is I’m doing. This is an asset in both my personal and professional life, and it has helped me when editing different sorts of documents.

As is true for most editors, I love books and writing of all kinds. When I sit down to read, I’m just as likely to pick up fiction as non-fiction, and my tastes vary widely, ranging from great writers of horror to science fiction to fantasy. I am as likely to read Hunter S. Thompson as a work of true crime.

My love of storytelling in general extends to my devotion to editing, so I’m passionate about making sure that my clients’ writing is error-free. No good story should be tainted by typos, grammatical mistakes, or run-on sentences.

I am also a life-long martial arts practitioner with brown belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and American Kenpo, Karate. I have cross trained in boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, and Mixed Martial Arts under accredited teachers and competed in over 100 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling matches. I follow the sport of MMA passionately. I have written articles about both MMA and BJJ and would love the chance to edit articles on these sports.

Finally, I like to make authentic connections with people. There’s nothing like finding that I share interests in common with a client, and when this happens, it empowers me and makes me all the more eager to help with their projects. Even if I don’t share these interests, that’s no hindrance at all. All I need to know is that the work or document is important to you, and I can put myself in your shoes. I wouldn’t want mistakes in my writing, and I won’t rest easy till I know that you are satisfied with the work I’ve done on yours.

Pertinent employment

In addition to working as an editor, I have experience both teaching and tutoring English as a Second Language at different colleges. These experiences have benefited me as a copyeditor. Reviewing students’ writing is quite similar to editing in that it requires a keen eye for any mistakes in grammar, punctuation, voice, etc.

I have found that many of my clients are non-native English speakers, so the crossover is quite relevant. I have used my ESL skills to help clients with application essays for college and graduate programs, such as nursing schools, MBA programs, and engineering programs, as well as for resumes and cover letters.

Furthermore, this ESL experience is very useful when reviewing writing by native speakers and experienced writers, as I have come to understand the nuts and bolts of the English language from multiple perspectives.

In putting these skills to use as a freelance editor, I relish the unique challenges offered by each new piece of writing I work on. Rest assured that regardless of your chosen genre, your writing is in good hands.
